Need a Veterinary Prescription? Feirm Supplies Makes It Simple

Get Your Animal Health Prescription Through Feirm Supplies & VetPal

Need a prescription for wormers, fluke treatments or other prescription-only animal health products? You don't have to organise the whole process yourself.

At Feirm Supplies, we make veterinary prescriptions as straightforward as possible for Irish farmers.

Through our VetPal prescription service, our qualified Responsible Persons can help organise your prescription request and liaise with our network of veterinary practitioners across Ireland.

We take the necessary details from you, submit the prescription request through VetPal and help manage the process. A qualified veterinary practitioner assesses the request and, where appropriate, authorises and issues the veterinary prescription.

Once approved, our team can then dispense the prescribed product through Feirm Supplies.

One team. One straightforward process. Less hassle for the farmer.

How Does the Feirm Supplies Prescription Service Work?

If you need a prescription-only animal health product, including an antiparasitic treatment, simply contact Feirm Supplies.

You don't necessarily need to arrive with a prescription already organised.

Our process is simple:

1. Talk to our team

Tell one of our Responsible Persons what product or treatment you require and provide the relevant herd, flock or animal information.

2. We organise the VetPal request

Our team processes the prescription request through VetPal, providing the information required for veterinary assessment.

3. A qualified vet reviews the request

Through our network of veterinary practitioners, the request is assessed by a qualified vet.

The veterinary practitioner remains responsible for deciding whether a prescription is clinically appropriate and for issuing the prescription.

4. The prescription is authorised

Where the veterinary practitioner is satisfied that the medicine is appropriate, the prescription can be approved and processed electronically.

5. Feirm Supplies dispenses your product

Once everything is approved, our qualified Responsible Persons can process and dispense the eligible medicine in accordance with the prescription.

That's it.

Come to Feirm Supplies → We help organise the prescription → Vet approves it → We supply your product.

VetPal is specifically designed to connect animal owners, veterinary practices and animal remedy stores and to facilitate prescription requests and collection from an animal remedy store.

What Is VetPal?

VetPal is an Irish digital veterinary platform that connects farmers and animal owners with veterinary practitioners and licensed animal remedy stores.

The system allows information about the animal, herd or flock to be provided to a veterinary practitioner so that they can assess a request and practise responsible prescribing.

VetPal also allows veterinary practitioners to complete and sign off prescription requests assigned to them.

For Feirm Supplies customers, the important part is simple:

You don't have to navigate the process alone.

Our team can help handle the VetPal process for you.

Can Feirm Supplies Organise My Veterinary Prescription?

Yes.

Feirm Supplies can facilitate a prescription request through VetPal and our network of qualified veterinary practitioners.

Our Responsible Persons gather the necessary information, manage the request through the VetPal system and help arrange the prescription process.

However, there is an important distinction.

The veterinary practitioner makes the prescribing decision.

Under Irish veterinary medicine rules, a veterinary prescription must be issued by a veterinary practitioner. A Responsible Person cannot independently decide to prescribe a veterinary medicine.

So when we say Feirm Supplies can organise your prescription, we mean:

Feirm Supplies manages the process → a qualified vet assesses and issues the prescription → Feirm Supplies dispenses the medicine.

This gives farmers a much easier way to deal with the new prescription requirements while ensuring medicines are prescribed and supplied responsibly.

Do Wormers Need a Veterinary Prescription in Ireland?

Yes. Antiparasitic veterinary medicines for food-producing animals became prescription-only in Ireland from 1 December 2025.

This means many products traditionally purchased directly from agricultural merchants now require veterinary authorisation before they can be supplied.

This includes medicines used for the control of parasites such as:

  • Stomach and gut worms
  • Lungworm
  • Liver fluke
  • Lice
  • Mites
  • Coccidia
  • Other internal and external parasites

Depending on the treatment, affected products can include drenches, pour-ons, injections, boluses and other antiparasitic medicines.

But prescription-only doesn't mean difficult to access.

Through Feirm Supplies and VetPal, we can help organise the prescription process and supply the required product once veterinary approval has been received.

Why Do Antiparasitic Medicines Now Require a Prescription?

One of the main reasons is the increasing problem of antiparasitic resistance.

Resistance happens when parasites become less susceptible to medicines that previously controlled them effectively.

The HPRA concluded that Ireland could no longer continue its previous exemption allowing many antiparasitic medicines to be supplied without a veterinary prescription because of evidence of antiparasitic resistance and associated risks.

The move to prescription-only status is intended to encourage more appropriate use of these medicines and help protect their effectiveness into the future.

This matters to farmers because ineffective parasite control can affect:

  • Weight gain
  • Feed efficiency
  • Milk production
  • Fertility
  • Youngstock performance
  • Animal health and welfare
  • Overall farm profitability

Keeping effective treatments available for the future is therefore important for both animal health and farm performance.

What Is the NVPS?

The National Veterinary Prescription System (NVPS) is Ireland's electronic system for veterinary prescriptions.

It records the prescribing and dispensing of prescription-only veterinary medicines and allows prescriptions to be handled electronically.

Farmers can receive prescription information electronically, while vets, licensed merchants and other authorised dispensers can use the system to manage the prescribing and dispensing process.

Digital prescribing became mandatory for prescription-only veterinary medicines in January 2025, while the final transition of antiparasitic medicines to prescription-only status took effect on 1 December 2025.

Why Were the Veterinary Medicine Regulations Introduced?

The changes form part of a wider effort across Ireland and the European Union to encourage the responsible use of veterinary medicines.

Two major concerns are:

Antimicrobial resistance Antimicrobial resistance occurs when microorganisms such as bacteria become resistant to medicines used to treat infections.

Protecting the effectiveness of antibiotics and other antimicrobial medicines is important for both animal and human health.

Antiparasitic resistance The same principle applies to wormers and other parasite-control medicines.

Repeated or inappropriate use can select for resistant parasites, eventually making treatments less effective.

The aim of the new prescribing rules is therefore not simply to add regulation.

It is to encourage farmers, vets and animal health suppliers to use the right medicine, for the right animals, at the right time.

Do I Have to Use My Own Vet to Get a Prescription?

Not necessarily in every situation.

Irish regulations provide for a Proper Assessment Protocol when a veterinary practitioner who does not provide ongoing veterinary services to the farmer is considering prescribing antiparasitic veterinary medicines.

This is particularly important to how services such as VetPal can operate.

Through VetPal, relevant information can be shared with the veterinary practitioner so that they have sufficient knowledge to assess the request and determine whether prescribing is appropriate. VetPal describes its platform as supporting the client-patient-practice relationship and allowing animal owners to provide relevant animal, herd or flock information.

The decision to prescribe always remains with the veterinary practitioner.

Do I Need to Download VetPal Myself?

Not when using the Feirm Supplies assisted prescription service.

Our aim is to remove as much hassle as possible for farmers.

Speak to our team and our Responsible Persons can help manage the prescription request through VetPal.

We'll tell you what information is required and guide you through the process.

That means less time dealing with systems and more time getting on with the farm.

Can I Still Buy My Wormers from Feirm Supplies?

Yes.

The move to prescription-only antiparasitics did not mean farmers had to stop purchasing these products through licensed agricultural retailers and co-ops.

The regulations maintained existing supply channels, subject to the required veterinary prescription.

With Feirm Supplies, we go a step further by helping you organise the prescription process through VetPal as well as supplying the product once approved.
